Show And Tell Friday: Hattie's Quilt

Hattie Lee Kervin holding Carrie Kervin sometime in 1901

John L. Kervin, Hattie's husband to her left

This is my first post to Show and Tell. I want to share a quilt made by my Great Grandmother Hattie Lee Kervin. Hattie made this quilt sometime in the late 1800s or the early 1900s. Hattie died, along with the baby, when she was giving birth to her third child. Hattie was only about 25 and my grandmother was only 6. The quilts that her mother made were one of the things she treasured most. She gave this quilt to me just before I got married. It has always been too fragile to use and I only take it out occassionally to check on it and to refold it. I treasure it as much for the fact that my grandmother wanted me to have it and trusted me to take care of it as anything.

Check out Kelli's blog for more Show and Tell posts.

What a treasure! It's sad that your great-grand-mother and her baby died when she was so young. How neat that your grandmother passed one of her treasures along to you.

Such a cool story, well, kind of sad actually!! Those colors are so lively--I wonder if that mustard color came froom something your greatgram once wore?

Oh my, that quilt is quite the treasure and it's so nice you have a photograph of the one who made it. Isn't it hilarious how serious people were in photos back then. Marvelous...

Your great-grandmother's handmade quilt is priceless, and lovely. Do you wonder if the fabrics in it are from clothes she made for her family? The yellow/gold color is beautiful. Life was so hard back then, but she took time to make something so special . . . did she wonder about future generations (you) as she stitched it?

And welcome to Show and Tell Friday - hope you post again!

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. I really appreciate them. I treasure this quilt. My Mother has a couple of others made by Hattie and I have a few made by my grandmother. I just got home from a day spent on the road for a business trip. I'm going to try to visit everyone's blogs and check out your posts. I look forward to seeing what you all have shared.

Wow, this quilt is in excellent condition for it's age. That is definitely something I would be passing down to one of my kids if it were mine.

We have some quilts that my husbands grandmother made, but we use them on a daily basis. I think one quilt is stored, and we haven't used it. His grandmother and grandfather would sit for hours and quilt together. They had their quilting rack suspended from the ceiling in a room in their house. They had some wonderful memories and passed on some wonderful memories to my husband when he was little. I think that is something that he will always remember about his grandparents.

Hey I need a copy of that picture. Which one is great grandaddy? Who is the woman holding the other baby in the picture? No wonder we're all so pretty. Even with the hardships you know she endured she was pretty.*LOL*
